Meanwhile, the new gym is located in a semi-basement area of the garden. et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2>Description<\/h2>\n<p>The project to expand Fallmerayer Secondary School in Bressanone addresses the issue of building on existing structures by engaging in a careful dialogue with the building designed by Othmar Barth in 1972. The project arose from the need to create six new classrooms and ancillary spaces while preserving the architectural balance and relationship with the landscape that characterise the original design. <\/p>\n<p>To comply with these principles, the proposal avoids new elevations or extensions that would alter the existing volume, instead identifying the necessary space within the converted gym to accommodate the new classrooms. This approach maintains the building's integrity and reinforces the continuity of the interior spaces, reinterpreting typical Barthian architectural elements such as zenithal lighting and the quality of communal spaces. <\/p>\n<p>The gym has moved outside to a new semi-basement structure that is integrated into the school grounds. The new facility houses a regulation-size basketball court, changing rooms, and spectator stands. It provides cover for the outdoor sports fields and can be used independently outside school hours. <\/p>\n<p>A significant aspect of the restoration work is the reinstatement of the central terrace, which was altered by the addition of a veranda in the 1990s. Removing the veranda allows the original configuration of the space to be restored, strengthening the relationship between architecture, light and landscape. <\/p>\n<p>Using laminated wood and dry construction systems for the new additions ensures sustainability and reversibility, as well as material consistency with the existing building.
