Reconstruction of the Spruggio ‘G. Tonini’ Alpine Refuge

The G. Tonini mountain hut was completely destroyed by fire in December 2016. It has now been rebuilt in the same location. Situated in the Lagorai mountain range, the hut has long been a landmark for hikers in the area.

The new project involves using recycled materials from the demolition of old structures, as well as making the new building more energy efficient.

Description

The Giovanni Tonini Mountain Hut, a landmark for all hikers frequenting the upper Val Spruggio, was inaugurated in 1972. It was named after the engineer, painter and mountaineer Giovanni Tonini, and was purchased by his family with the aim of converting the existing rustic building into a mountain hut.

The refuge has always offered hospitality and shelter in the mountains, boasting a simple, austere and unassuming structure.

Various renovations and extensions have characterised the structure over the years, until 2010–11, when a new cableway was built to transport goods necessary for operating the refuge, among other interventions. In 2016, the refuge was completely destroyed by a devastating fire.

The design of the new ‘G. Tonini’ mountain hut involves orienting the long side of the structure towards the valley to enjoy the fantastic view and ensure natural lighting for almost the entire day. In keeping with local tradition, the exterior will be rendered with coloured ‘Tassullo’ mortar, which is characterised by its light beige shade.

The first floor will be entirely dedicated to bedrooms, while the ground floor will house the cable car’s operational facilities, the technical room, the kitchen and a dining room with seating for sixty. There will also be a small bar. Outside, there will be a large, partly covered terrace with plenty of seating, some of which will be movable to face the valley and the view. This allows visitors to fully enjoy the location, even during their leisure time.

The roof will feature next-generation photovoltaic tiles, which will reduce the visual impact of the panels while ensuring a minimum level of energy self-sufficiency.
