The transparency of the soil at GreenItaly

This site-specific installation was created for the first edition of the GreenItaly fair in Parma, where it hosted the Villegiardini space.

‘The Transparency of the Soil’ invites reflection on stratification as a common principle in art, landscape and nature. In this space, construction becomes landscape. Textures dissolve in a play of thresholds and reflections, suggesting rather than showing. Light filters between solids and voids like a breath.

Description

‘The Transparency of the Soil’ is an installation that invites reflection on the concept of stratification in art, landscapes and nature.

The project intertwines two concepts of transparency: artistic transparency, which compresses depth and complexity into a layered plane of overlapping planes; and the transparency of the landscape, which is a living quality of the soil that becomes a tactile image. Here, the visible surface refers to an essential but hidden depth of roots, relationships, and continuous exchanges between human work and nature. Both dimensions allude to a process of continuous modification that develops over time, combining the sense of touch with sight.

In this installation, depth takes the form of transparent ground. It is not just a surface to be traversed; it is a fertile thickness that offers a glimpse of what would normally remain hidden.

The building becomes landscape around this space. The textures dissolve into a play of thresholds and reflections, suggesting rather than showing, and allowing light to filter through solids and voids like a breath. Inside, plant material is arranged in interacting layers: the horizontal layer houses plants linked to the territory; the vertical layer sees soil bend and rise to give the ground shape; and the deepest layer reveals roots and stratifications as a visible part of an invisible world and the almost-foundation of what we see.

‘The transparency of the soil’ is a poetic and narrative device: a living material that not only supports the surface, but also invites us to look deep down, where art and nature converge.
