REDEVELOPMENT OF THE WATERCITYFRONT

WESTERN SEAFRONT OF THE CITY OF PESARO

SHORTLISTED

The project reimagines Pesaro’s northern seafront as one continuous public space, connecting the city with the landscape. The redesign of Via Trieste transforms it into a pedestrian promenade, connecting the urban fabric with the sea via a series of interconnected paths, rest areas, and green spaces.

Taking inspiration from the compositional principles of Gioachino Rossini’s music, the project translates rhythm, variation and crescendo into a spatial score, which then structures the coastal landscape.

Description

The Ponente WaterCityFront project was developed as part of a competition for the redevelopment of Pesaro’s northern seafront and proposes a new interpretation of the coastal public space as a place of connection between the city, the landscape and cultural identity. The project extends along approximately two kilometres of coastline and takes as its reference point the unique urban position of the seafront: a threshold between the fabric of the “garden city”, the historic centre and the open horizon of the sea.

The proposal identifies continuity of the landscape as the project’s guiding principle. The current fragmented succession of flower beds and residual spaces is reinterpreted through a unified ground design, which creates a fluid sequence of environments and relationships between movement and rest spaces. Via Trieste thus becomes a large, public, pedestrian space that connects the city to the landscape, organising the seafront as a continuous yet articulated system of places.

The central element of the concept is the dialogue with the musical tradition of Gioachino Rossini, who is a symbolic figure of the city. The project translates the compositional principles of Rossini’s music, such as rhythm, variation and crescendo, into spatial and landscape strategies. The seafront is conceived as an urban score, with paving, vegetation, furnishings and light forming a rhythmic sequence of episodes and pauses to guide visitors’ experiences.

The project’s structure is inspired by opera, dividing the route into recognisable narrative moments – the overture, central scenes and finale – that correspond to different spatial intensities and urban functions. Alternating passageways, rest areas and meeting places create a walkway that can be used in many different ways throughout the year.

The WaterCityFront in Ponente offers a vision of the seafront as a continuous urban landscape where architecture, nature, and cultural memory intertwine. This gives the city a distinctive seafront that is closely linked to its identity.
