Master plan for the redevelopment of the ‘Beyond the Wall’ youth centre in Bassano del Grappa.
‘Beyond the Wall’ transforms the Bassano del Grappa Youth Centre into an open, flexible and inclusive space. By transcending the physical and perceptual boundaries of the surrounding wall, the project creates a new central square, a multipurpose gym, modular workshops and pedestrian paths that connect the indoor and outdoor spaces. The interaction between architecture and community generates a place of identity, participation and recognition — the beating heart of relationships and activities.

Description
Bassano del Grappa is an example of a city where history and modernity constantly interact, with its lively and multi-layered historic centre. In this context, the Youth Centre, which is currently separated from the urban fabric by walls and fences, offers the opportunity to establish an open, integrated social hub. The proposed development will transform the existing spaces, restoring visual and functional continuity between the interior and exterior areas and organising them around a central square — a new meeting point and social space.
The pedestrian paths, which are laid out on two levels, are designed according to a complementary logic: a direct north-south axis connects the Ossuary Temple to the southern part of the site, while a slower route highlights the existing historical features and creates clearly identifiable functional areas. The four main entrances, located to the north, north-east, east and south, serve as urban gateways, ensuring accessibility, safety and an organic flow of users.
The new complex includes a multipurpose gym, beach volleyball courts, modular workshops, a bar and guest accommodation. The gym has been designed as a hybrid space capable of hosting sporting, cultural or theatrical events. The outdoor spaces adhere to the concept of the ‘open city’, comprising urban gardens, play areas, temporary exhibitions and semi-covered walkways defined by a continuous pergola — a symbol of identity and a link between the centre’s various areas.
Selective demolition and targeted reconstruction have improved accessibility, functionality, energy efficiency and user comfort, all while maintaining sustainability. The project enhances the relationship with the urban and natural surroundings, encouraging social interaction and strengthening the community’s sense of belonging. ‘Oltre il Muro’ is more than just a renovated centre; it is a place for meeting and socialising where architecture, historical memory and urban life intertwine.
