ITS ANgelo rizzoli

Innovation, modernity and continuity sum up the essence of the project for the extension of the “Pavoniano Artigianelli” school complex to include teaching facilities for ITS Angelo Rizzoli (Higher Technical Institute). The main objectives of the project are: speed of execution, cost-effectiveness and harmonious integration between the new and existing structures.

The outcome is a contemporary building, distinguished by the elegance of its simple lines and functionality. With an environmentally conscious approach, it has been designed to meet the specific training needs and quality of life requirements of the potential users, with a focus on sustainability.

Description

The volumetric design of the building was influenced by its location, characterized by geometric complexity and the coexistence of non-congruent reference axes. The hierarchical organization of orientations and existing spaces gave rise to the concept of the “square”: an urban-like area dedicated exclusively to the school and adjacent sports facilities, serving as a versatile outdoor space. While the school volume remains closed to the outside, it opens up internally and enters into a dialogue with its surroundings.

Based on the analysis of the school building and the “PalaPavoni”, the project focused on key elements that define the identity of the intervention: the geometric sequence of the facade, with alternating solid and void spaces, coupled with the deviation of the frames and the interplay of colors.

In a departure from the school’s traditional two-tone color scheme, the facade adopts a white tone, while the frames are painted black, no longer tied to individual windows, but accentuating the window sections of each floor. The rhythm of solid and void spaces is emphasized by a chromatic pattern delineated by windows and paneling, while the chromatic alternation is echoed in the glass sections of the stairwell through stringcourse panels and full-height windows.

The design achieves a modern and elegant facade that establishes a stylistic identity while maintaining contextual harmony. The interior of the 1,200 square meter teaching space includes a multi-functional auditorium.

The entrance hall, directly linked to the front office, is designed as a versatile and informal space, while the connecting areas between the different environments are designed to function as an extension of the classroom environment. Sliding walls can be incorporated between classrooms to increase flexibility, complemented by abundant natural light facilitated by glass facades.
