Description

The Bareggio Hub project transforms the site of the former paper mill into a new public hub, reinterpreting the site’s industrial heritage as a space dedicated to culture, social interaction and community life. The building takes the form of an open and flexible civic space, capable of engaging with the new square and the wider network of public spaces, thereby becoming a focal point for the community.

The architecture arises from the combination of simple volumes, shaped by the removal of sections to create loggias, terraces, double-height spaces and communal areas. The ground floor, which is completely open to the public, houses a foyer, a café and a co-working space that flow seamlessly into the public space, whilst the upper floors accommodate an auditorium, reading rooms and multi-purpose spaces organised according to a flexible and reconfigurable layout.

The proposal reinterprets the character of Lombardy’s industrial architecture through a contemporary design language, based on compositional clarity, structural integrity and the quality of materials. Natural materials, large glazed surfaces and a modular structure ensure comfort, accessibility and adaptability over time.

Sustainability is integrated right from the design stage: green roofs, solar panels, a high-performance building envelope and materials with a low environmental impact all contribute to creating an efficient and resilient building. Bareggio Hub thus becomes a new hub for community life, capable of bringing together memory, public space and innovation within a single architectural design.
