A project to unite two squares, one community, in Fara Olivana

The project aims to create spaces that celebrate cultural identity, foster social interaction and enhance the urban quality of the two town centers. The redevelopment of these urban spaces is inspired by the history of the area, with water as the unifying element and guiding theme throughout the project.

The area of Fara Olivana Con Sola (Bergamo, Italy), historically characterized by centuries-old drainage ditches, reflects the region’s agricultural past and its strategic location between Milan and Brescia.

Description

The pedestrian squares are paved with large slabs of pietra serena, interspersed with a grid of river pebbles. Square seating and water features in both squares are also made from the same paving material. Greenery, consisting of hornbeams and non-fruiting mulberries indigenous to the area, is integrated into the design.

The revitalized squares become spaces where citizens can rediscover the joy of “being,” sharing, and belonging to their community.

In Sola, architectural elements of significant historical and cultural value, such as the church and the tree-lined avenue, blend seamlessly with a new multifunctional building that replaces two outdated structures. The new building, characterized by clean and essential lines, reinterprets the Lombard farmhouse structure in a modern context and serves as a landmark for the square. Transparent like water, the building opens up to the square and once again becomes the focal point for communal activities. The building is constructed with Nearly Zero Emission Building (NZEB) characteristics.

The existing library park is transformed into a unified space, bringing together the square, water elements, monoliths and column jets. The design of this space follows a triangular matrix, creating three distinct areas: a section paved with anti-trauma rubber with inclusive games for children, a second area with an outdoor gym system for fitness enthusiasts, and a central space with terraced seating ideal for relaxation, reading and outdoor cultural events.
